What to do in September

September is a pivotal month for easy-care gardening, offering a blend of both winding down and preparing for the next season.  This is the perfect time to deadhead spent blooms, especially on perennials and roses, to encourage a final flush of flowers. Pruning is also key, as you can trim back overgrown shrubs and hedges. For the vegetable patch, it’s about harvesting the last of the summer crops and planting cool-weather vegetables like lettuce, spinach, and radishes. Easy-care in September also means preparing for winter; this includes cleaning out gutters, mulching flower beds to protect roots, and bringing in tender plants that won’t survive the cold. It’s a period of gentle transition, allowing gardeners to enjoy the final days of the growing season while setting the stage for a healthy garden in the spring.
