November tasks

Time to plant trees!

November is tree planting time

November might seem like a cold, damp month to be working outdoors, but for keen UK gardeners, it’s one of the best times of year to plant new trees. While the leaves have fallen and the plant looks dormant above ground, the soil retains warmth from the summer, providing ideal conditions for root establishment. This period allows the tree to focus all its energy on developing a strong root system without the stress of simultaneously maintaining foliage and fighting drought.

The key advantage of planting now is the availability of bare-root trees. Bare-root stock is significantly cheaper than container-grown trees and, crucially, establishes faster. By planting in November, you allow the tree several months to settle into its new spot. The consistent winter moisture means you rarely have to water, saving you time and ensuring the roots don’t dry out.

This autumn planting window helps your new tree survive the critical first year. A tree planted now will have several months to generate essential fine feeder roots before the demands of spring growth arrive. When spring does warm up, the root system is already robust and ready to efficiently absorb the water and nutrients needed to produce healthy leaves and new shoots.

When planting, ensure the hole is wide enough to spread the roots out comfortably, and the planting depth matches the soil mark on the stem. Backfill with the original soil, tamp down gently, and water it in thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots. Adding a layer of mulch will help retain moisture and keep competitive weeds at bay. By getting your trees in the ground this November, you are setting them up for a long, healthy life.
