There is something undeniably magical about seeing lilies emerge in your garden. If you want one of the most stunning and fragrant displays of the summer, planting them in pots is an absolute game-changer. Containers offer you total control over the environment, which is exactly what these beautiful plants need to truly thrive and showcase their dramatic blooms.
While there is some nuance to their needs—for instance, most prefer acidic, ericaceous soil, whereas the early-flowering Madonna Lily specifically loves alkaline conditions—the secret to success really comes down to drainage. Lilies absolutely detest sitting in soggy soil.
I have found the best way to ensure they stay happy is to prioritise a loose, airy compost. If you want to keep things simple, mixing a bit of perlite or vermiculite into your compost works wonders for drainage. Personally, I like to blend in some leafmould and grit for that perfect, loose structure that allows the bulbs to breathe.
When you are ready to plant them, aim to bury the scaly bulbs roughly four inches deep. Initially, it is best to tuck your pots away in a lightly shaded area until established. Keep a close eye on your watering; staying consistent is key. Once those promising buds start to develop as we head into May and June, that is your cue to move the pots to their final position.
The golden rule for lily success is to give them “shady roots and sunny flowers.” They love to have their feet cool and protected while their heads bask in the sunshine. A sheltered spot that faces east or west is often the perfect compromise, providing the ideal conditions for a show-stopping performance that will make your patio feel like a floral paradise.
