Enchanting Night-Scented Stock

Sowing Night Scented Stock

As the long days of June stretch into warm, golden evenings, your garden has the potential to become a sensory sanctuary. One of the most rewarding additions you can make this month is Night-Scented Stock (Matthiola longipetala). While it may not win awards for its understated, slightly straggly appearance during the day, it undergoes a magical transformation at dusk, releasing an intense, spicy, and honey-like fragrance that can perfume an entire patio.

June is an excellent time for sowing Night-Scented Stock, as the soil has warmed significantly, encouraging rapid germination. Because these plants have a relatively short flowering window, sowing them directly into the garden is the best approach; they dislike being transplanted.

Choose a spot that receives plenty of sunshine and features well-draining soil. Simply rake the area to create a fine tilth and scatter the seeds thinly. Cover them lightly with a thin layer of compost or soil, as they need a little light to germinate effectively. Water the area gently with a fine-rose watering can to keep the soil moist without dislodging the tiny seeds. If you are sowing into containers, use a high-quality multipurpose compost and ensure the pot has adequate drainage.

Once your seedlings emerge—usually within 10 to 14 days—thin them out to about 15cm apart to prevent overcrowding. This air circulation is vital for keeping the plants healthy. Night-Scented Stocks are remarkably low-maintenance, requiring little more than regular watering during dry spells.

By sowing in June, you ensure a succession of blooms that will carry the sweetness of summer deep into the late evenings. Place your pots near windows, doorways, or seating areas where you can fully appreciate their nocturnal perfume. By August, your efforts will be rewarded with a nightly display that elevates your outdoor space, turning a simple garden into a fragrant, atmospheric escape perfect for summer relaxation.
