For many, the sight of a magnificent Amaryllis—or Hippeastrum—is synonymous with the festive cheer of Christmas and New Year. These huge, impressive bulbs are a perfect project to start now, promising a spectacular display of colour in early spring. Getting started is simple, but choosing the right home for your bulb is crucial. Select a container that is not too large, as an excessive amount of potting compost will encourage lush foliage growth at the expense of those stunning, signature blooms. Plant the bulb so it is only half submerged in a well-drained compost, ensuring a stable yet restricted environment for optimal flower development.

The most critical step immediately after planting is providing sufficient heat. These are tropical plants, and to trigger the magnificent flowers from their dormant state, they require a constant, warm temperature, ideally between 18°C and 25°C. This initial phase is best started in a dark place. The moment you see noticeable growth, it’s time to move your Amaryllis to its final flowering location. This spot should be bright and as warm as your household allows, remembering that any cold spell will halt the plant’s progress.
