Keeping your poinsettia merry and bright long past Christmas
Hundreds of thousands of vibrant poinsettias will be exchanged as gifts this Christmas, and with a little careful attention, these iconic holiday plants can stay beautiful for months to come. While we know them as compact, colourful houseplants, it’s important to remember their tropical roots. In their native Mexico, poinsettias flourish as large shrubs, sometimes reaching 10 feet high, growing comfortably at the edge of forests. The modern, bushy plants we buy are treated with a growth retardant to achieve that familiar holiday shape, but their fundamental need for damp warmth remains key to their survival.
The most common mistake people make is placing their poinsettia in an environment that causes stress. These plants are exceptionally sensitive to extreme conditions. They dislike cool nights, overly hot and dry rooms, and sudden changes in temperature. To keep yours thriving, choose a spot with a constant, average temperature. This means avoiding cold draughts from doors or windows, as well as steering clear of heating vents or radiators. Similarly, be cautious of very bright spots that can overheat the plant in the middle of the day, leading to leaf drop.
Watering your poinsettia correctly is crucial. They appreciate plenty of moisture but hate sitting in soggy compost, which leads to root rot. The best technique is to let the compost surface dry out completely before you water again. When it is time to soak, place the potted plant in a sink full of lukewarm water and allow it to stand for about 10 minutes. This ensures the entire root ball is thoroughly hydrated. Once soaked, remove the pot and let all the excess water drain away completely before returning it to its chosen spot. Following these simple steps will ensure your festive cheer lasts well into the New Year.
