November 2024 Things to do now

Why you should mulch in November!

As November rolls in, it’s time to rev up our garden preparations for the chilly winter months ahead! One of the key steps in ensuring our gardens survive winter is to get that mulch down before the ground freezes – it’s an exciting seasonal ritual!

It is like wrapping your borders in a cosy, protective blanket that shields the soil and roots from the harshness of winter. Mulching insulates the soil, maintains a stable ground temperature, protects tender roots from unexpected frost, and provides our sleeping friends with what they need during dry, chilly spells.

I really enjoy putting down mulch in November, as it is a great way to keep those stubborn weeds at bay and help protect against soil erosion. I love using things like fallen leaves, compost, or wood chips! And have you tried coir compost made from coconut husks? It’s fantastic! Coir compost not only serves as an excellent mulch, but it also improves the structure of my heavy clay soil.

Did you know mulching is a fantastic way to boost the health of your soil? By adding organic matter to your soil, you are giving it a real treat! There is no need to dig it in; just let the hardworking worms do their job as they break it down over time. This natural process enriches your soil with essential nutrients that help your plants thrive, but it also supports the activity of beneficial microorganisms. A win-win for your garden!
